PAR. 1 week to go. Birthday Half Marathon

Ah today is a big day. I’ve been reluctant to go for a long run since the 20-miler as I am very aware that my knee is not 100%. In med school, we’ve been taught RICE. Rest. Ice. Compression. Elevate. Instead, I’ve kept it moving and loose and I’ve been taking ibuprofen (watch out for an upper GI bleed.). It’s a fine balance between resting and not losing fitness. I’ve rested, had a couple short runs and time on the stationary bike. But I need one more long run. So today is the day.

I woke up at 6 am, aiming to set off at 7 am. Smoothie. Bagel with butter and lemon curd (yum!). We had Chicken/Tomato linguine last night.

Xavier woke up – made him breakfast. Maya woke up – made her breakfast. Then they remembered it was my birthday! They ran and got the cards they made (Happy Birthday! You are the Best Mum ever! – never gets old). David wakes up… here comes the presents – Rituals and Lindt (the kids picked the presents). Then it was time to go for a birthday half marathon!

It was grey, wet, and windy. At the beginning of the run, I struggled at first. I was not mentally ready. I had to stop and actually had to verbally say to myself… ‘What is your goal here?!’ ‘I want to run 13 miles.’ And off I went.

It was very difficult to escape the wind (coming from the south-west) so the seafront was out of the picture, so I opted for the eastern side of Portsea island. Coming back down, there was an extra challenge running against the wind with tired legs. But must run beyond the discomfort.

Birthday 13 miles. Done. And the knee is okay!
